Organizational Overview:

The Central Municipal Court handles traffic violations, municipal ordinance violations, and disorderly persons offenses in accordance with New Jersey state law. The department manages case processing, hearings, fine collection, warrant processing, and court records while providing assistance to the public regarding case inquiries and payments.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity will be to serve as the Court Clerk for the Central Municipal Court of Bergen County. Under supervision of the Municipal Court Administrator, perform detailed court clerical work involving the collection of fees for traffic violations; does related work as required.

Job Responsibilities:              

  • Attends court sessions.
  • Answer telephone inquiries from public and walk-in inquiries regarding the Violations Bureau.
  • Perform a variety of court clerical work.
  • Maintains, classifies, indexes and cross-references records and files for accuracy.
  • Receives fines and costs in non-indictable offenses, subject to the limitations as provided by law or Part VII of the Rules of Court or Statewide Violations Bureau Schedule.
  • Complies with the New Jersey Rules of Court, Supreme Court Directives, laws and established policies and procedures governing the operation of the Municipal Courts.
  • May operate sound recording devices for the recording of testimony and other statements in a court room.
  • Performs related duties, as required.

Schedule:   

  • Full time (40 hours/week). Monday through Friday.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the preparation and/or processing of legal papers and documents, or as an aide or an administrative assistant to an executive or administrative officer in a public or private agency.
  • NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required experience may substitute semester hour credits from an accredited college or university on a year-for-year basis with thirty (30) semester hour credits being equal to one (1) year of experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of EMACS, Enterprise Portal Systems, PCSAM, sound recording and Zoom.

Other Requirements:

  • Bilingual English – Spanish is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Word, Outlook and Excel programs.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Salary: $45,000 / per annum
